If you have ever been to a grocery store without a list you know how things can get out of control quickly with little thought to it. Frugal shoppers know that shopping without a list is not on the agenda for smart-shopping. It is a known fact that people who shop without a list purchase more unnecessary items, and spend more money all around, then those who plan their trip ahead of time.

The savings and clearance racks can catch you off guard if you find yourself at the grocers unprepared. Items you wouldn’t normally buy seem to make their way into your cart when you have no list. The general census states that when you plan ahead you make smarter and more efficient moves; this includes shopping for food. Don’t be caught by shell-shock at the register. Just plan ahead.

One of the simplest ways to always stay on top of your current food needs is to keep a running list on your refrigerator. A running list is a list that is always going, always being used. You mark down every item that you ran out of and when. This will keep you up to date when you have to make your week’s end shopping list. Make sure everyone in the house knows the procedure for the running list. If someone eats, or uses, the last of an item in the kitchen then they should be aware that they are responsible for marking down the item on the running list.

Working together helps the process flow smoothly. With a little effort you can easily save hundreds of dollars each year just by being aware of the food that you buy. Those extra items add up and without the hassle of paying for item you won’t eat or use then you find the savings to be quite relieving.

You can also find some relief at the grocers by keeping a routine in place. Every twelve weeks grocery stores rotate sale items. This means that the same items generally go on sale every three months. So do yourself a favor and stock up on your favorite on-sale items, enough to last you those few months, and by the time you use up your stock-pile another sale should be rolling around. This is a trick that can work for your benefit too. By running the sales every three months the stores assume it’s a long period of time and that everyone will have to purchase more products at the regular price. They can be outsmarted if you buy in bulk quantities and learn to abide by the twelve week rule.

Are you wondering just exactly where your money is going on a daily basis? Are you looking for ways to save some money while still enjoying a quality of life that keeps you happy and healthy? Are you on a fixed income and trying to find a way to maximize your monetary stream while not having a rollercoaster of spending each month? Do you essentially want to have a stable financial life that enables you to have relatively the same amount of money available to spend on a daily basis, and thus a reliable standard of living? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then it is likely that this will be a good read to get you going on your joyous way to financial equanimity.

There is something called “budgeting” that just about everyone has likely heard of and has, almost as likely, put off until some future undesignated date or avoided all together. This is a word that one’s spontaneity probably has a tendency to avoid and thus people often steer unconsciously away from it. The fact is that the budgeting process, when properly done, actually allows for more worthwhile spontaneity while simultaneously preventing excesses that can potentially lead to such issues as obesity. For example, if a second pint of ice cream is not in the budget for today then it will not be anything to worry about at any point in the future. What is wonderful is that when something really worthwhile arises spontaneously, then you will have plenty of funds to go for it and not regret having spent money on silly excesses that you may regret anyway due to their unhealthy nature.

Five dollars (or the equivalent in your country’s currency) saved every day can turn into almost two thousand in a year. One less small frivolity per day, such as ice cream or wine, can turn into a vacation to Paris or Hawaii or similar in a year. It could even eventually turn into a car or even a house. On a small scale, maintaining a stable daily budget while saving a portion of the remainder as a “spontaneity fund” best ensures that you will be able to do something truly worthwhile when you want to do it.

Budgeting on a daily basis is rather simple when it really comes down to it. You basically look at your monthly income, subtract your general monthly costs such as rent and utility and transportation bills, then split the remainder of it into the number of days in that month. Look seriously at how much you need to spend to cover the basic dietary needs and so on, with enough daily perks of satisfaction to keep you motivated. This will be your daily personal budget. Then take the remaining amount per day and multiply it by the number of days to see your potential savings for that month. It is obviously good to budget in a portion of this as a monthly allowance for soap and other household necessities. This should leave a decent amount to use for something really worthwhile when the opportunity arises.

Hopefully this has given you a basis for understanding the basic personal budgeting process while overcoming the spontaneity concerns that can lead to putting off budgeting completely. So don’t wait another day, start today!

One of the great attributes of human beings is their adaptability. Even those who are afraid of change will adapt to a situation if they absolutely have to. It definitely takes longer for some people to adapt to new situations than it does others, but in time all people generally learn how to accept new circumstances and make the best of them.

One of the key things that need to happen to move acceptance along is a person becoming so tired of feeling bad about a situation that they find a way to turn it around. That sometimes takes looking at the situation in a different light, or just finding the bright side of it.

The never ending flood of bad news about the economy, streaming into the living rooms of everybody who owns a television, has slowed down considerably. Only to have it be piped in by advertisers for everything from grocery stores to restaurants. At first this was a little worse than having the news stations obsess nonstop about the situation because being exposed to advertisements is unavoidable. They get you on your mobile phone whenever they can, they pop up when you check your e-mail, and they sneak up on you in flyers stuck to your windshield. The only way to get used to this new way of life is to adapt yourself to the reality of it and find out what you can get out of it. As it turns out there is a lot you can get out of it.

Anybody who has been grocery shopping in the last couple of months knows that food prices are coming down. It was an obvious thing to happen, but since it did not happen right away, it came as a pleasant surprise to some people. All the major food stores are fighting tooth and nail to keep their old customers and going for the big prize of getting new customers. High end grocery stores that would usually be passed over because their prices were not competitive are now a delightful option, and they have much bigger selections of items, as well as gourmet choices. To maximize this very fortunate link in the chain of recent events, do not limit yourself to one store. Shop at two or three stores to get the best prices available for everything you buy. This is completely feasible now that all the major grocery stores are within a couple of miles of each other.

Dining out has never been cheaper now that most restaurant chains have taken on a defensive stance in keeping themselves open and busy. Two eat for the price of one coupons are in newspapers, being sent in the mail, and available on the internet. So eat drink and be merry.

Haggling is now cool again. This bargaining tool was traditionally known to be available to the consumer who was shopping swap meets and flea markets. It is now completely acceptable and highly recommended in all places of business, big and small. One of the tricks to be even more successful in your negotiations is to bring one of those advertisements from a competitor along to prove to the sales person that you can get a better deal elsewhere. Looks like those advertisements come in handy after all.

Buying a new car is fun and exciting, but it can also be risky to your wallet. Even if you have quite a budget to work with, there’s no point in paying more than necessary for your car. And there are different ways you can end up paying more if you’re not careful, both on the price of the car and the financing of the new car purchase.

First, do your shopping before you go to the dealership. Look in newspapers and advertisements at the cars you’re interested in. Comparison shop online. Find out how much the full coverage insurance on the car you want would be per month. Also, find out about how much the monthly payments will probably be on the car—you can usually find this in newspaper ads and online to get a baseline idea.

If it’s in your budget and all is well with your first choice, then you’ve done the step many people ignore that costs them money—you know what you want. It’s much harder for the car salesperson to talk an informed consumer into a more expensive purchase than it is to take someone with only a vague idea and put suggestions in their head about what they really want (learn more about negotiating with car salespeople).

As part of deciding exactly what you want, by the way, don’t stop at make, model and color. Decide the features that you must have in this car and those that you can do without, as well as some that you can compromise on one way or another. Added features can dramatically raise the price of a car—or lower it—after you’ve already decided what you’ll pay.

Next, know exactly how much you can pay down, and strongly consider shopping around for financing. You might be tempted, now that you know exactly what you want, to run for the dealership and buy that car! Give yourself some breathing room though and take it slow and steady. Go to your credit union or bank and find out the terms of the new car loan if you got it through them. Look at other banks and shop around.

You can secure financing before you go in the form of a pre-approved loan if you wish. Or you can take the quotes with you to the dealership, negotiate the price of the car, and then ask them if they can beat those terms. Know your credit score when you walk into the dealership to avoid being told it’s too low too qualify for a certain low APR. Just be sure you’ve nailed down the price of the car before you start talking about financing, or they’ll adjust the price they give you to make up for lower interest rates.

Also, if you’ve decided you need a certain car only with certain features and the cars on the lot have lots of extras, consider ordering a new car with only what you need. This alone may prompt the salesperson to lower the price of a new car on the lot.

The telephone is one of the greatest inventions of all time. It has evolved a great deal since it’s invention in the 1800’s. Long after it’s inventors have gone to their better place, it is still being celebrated, enhanced, and sometimes cursed.

Why would such a life transforming invention be cursed, thrown, and sometimes, just unplugged. Since their beginning, telephones made it possible to talk to people who lived too far away to see on a regular basis. It gave people more personal ways to communicate with their loved ones.

The telephone quickly became so much more than a luxury, it became a necessity. When a family member became sick, a doctor could finally be called in an instant. The business world reaped the infinite benefits of this ground breaking technology almost immediately.

Today we have the invention of answering machines, caller I.D., and call blocking, used just as much, as the phone itself. The truth is, it isn’t always somebody we want to talk to on the other end of that phone line. Sometimes it’s the dreaded bill collector calling to ruin your day.

Bill collectors used to routinely go to the residence or place of business of their debtors. Although the phone was already long invented, they preferred to speak to the person who owed them money, face to face. They believed their presence would impel or embarrass prompt payment. They found, as time went on, that people became less interested in unwelcome visits to their homes, and saw them as intrusions, they became defensive and evasive. At times bill collectors were met with violence. Now the telephone is second, only to the mail, as communication of choice, of many businesses, when attempting to collect a debt.

In early days, bill collectors could, and did, call to the point of harassment of the debtor. Not only did they call at all hours of the night and day. They made threats, that they would not have considered making in person, and regularly insulted anybody who did not agree to pay the debt. It got so bad that people could be told anything, and this caused them to feel so much pressure they were committing crimes, and even committing suicide.

Something had to be done about these, and other telecommunications violations. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nations consumer protection agency was created in 1914. Since then additional laws have been passed giving the agency greater authority. In addition, in 1977 the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) was passed specifically to protect the rights of the debtors. It’s important for all consumers to be aware of their rights, and to know that the FDCPA is consistently reviewed and updated. It is also the law, and any violation of this law is highly enforced and severely punishable. If you know these laws and you owe money, it is now okay to plug in your phone. If bill collectors violate this act, they could be the ones owing you money

What Buffet has referred to as the ’stupid tax’ is one of people’s largest yearly expenditures, gambling. Most people view gambling as a recreational form of entertainment. A few people have a clinical compulsion to gamble and need to seek help. However, many people spend more money than they should at gambling, at least more than they need to.

When going to a casino, the first thing is to set a max loss as to how much you will spend. Remember, gambling is not ‘investing.’ The odds are against you, so you will lose money in the long run. It should just be viewed as a short-term thrill, so budget the maximum you wish to spend an evening/monthly on this hobby.

Another thing to do is research the rules of gambling games. Different games have different odds, some of which are much better for the player. This means you have a more likely chance at coming out a winner, or at the very least, you will get to gamble for longer with the same amount of money.

Having a budget and sticking to it is the key to financial success, but in order to create a good budget, you must be aware of how much you earn and how much you spend, every month.

Having a budget and sticking to it is the key to financial success, but in order to create a good budget, you must be aware of how much you earn and how much you spend, every month. The problem here is that many people are not sure that how much their income will be every month. If you are a self-employed professional, you probably find it very difficult to calculate the accurate figure for your income. Even salaried individuals may have certain additional sources of income, such as commissions, incentives, and other such things. The amount of the salary may vary from one month to another. However, even if you have irregular income, you can still create a good budget for you. Here’s how.

Listing The Things Where You Will Be Spending Your Money In A Given Month

Since you are not aware of the exact amount of your income, you should start by listing the things that you are going to do with money in a particular month. This has to be an extensive list, covering all small as well as big expenditure. The list can include the money you transfer to the retirement fund, your insurance bill, the mortgage payment, gasoline purchase, and even grocery expenses. Do not hesitate in listing even the outlandish things that you very well know that you will not be able to do, such as purchasing a new car. List each and everything.

Set Your Priorities

Once you are ready with the list, the next thing that you have to do is to set your priorities. Here is an example. Groceries probably make the most important thing on which you will be spending your money. So, groceries are at the top, which can be followed by paying utilities as the second most important thing. The third one is paying rent. The fourth may be some basic clothing. The idea is to create a list numbering down from the most important to the least important. Keep the less important items as secondary. This way, when you get the money, you are aware that how you have to spend the same. Start by paying for the most important things first. This strategy will also save you from overspending on things that are not that important.

What If The Income Is Highly Irregular

There are also people who have very irregular income, something like this - they earn $20000 a month and then nothing the next two months, then $10000 and then nothing the very next month and so on. For example, the income of a real estate agent is always like that because their income is solely based on commissions. You obviously cannot skip eating and driving for a given month and go for a luxury vacation the next month. The best strategy in this case is to find out the average monthly income, put all the money you earn in a bank account, and then withdraw the amount of average monthly income every month.

Thus, we can see that budgeting is also possible with an irregular income. It may a bit more difficult than creating budget on a fixed income, but it is still possible and will work.

If you cannot earn more, the only way to save money is to spend less. This is what budgeting is all about. It can be a powerful tool to help you manage your debts, as well.

If you cannot earn more, the only way to save money is to spend less. This is what budgeting is all about. It can be a powerful tool to help you manage your debts, as well. It can help you pay off your debts faster and achieve a debt free life. Otherwise, things will be very difficult for you. In fact, even if you are not already in debt, the habit of overspending and the lack of budget can eventually get you there. Therefore, whether you are in debt or not, it is important for you to have a budget.

Change Your Perceptions Before You Change Your Habit

The very reason why people avoid budgeting is that they have negative opinions about it. Well, having a budget does not mean rinsing out your paper towels! It is also not about living a miserly life void of fun. You just have to trim costs – you don’t have to stop spending. Likewise, considering that we now have easy-to-use budgeting software programs widely available, it is also a wrong perception to think of it as a lot of mind-numbing number crunching. As long as these unattractive thoughts are ruling your mind, you will never be able to realize the true power of budgeting. So, the first thing you have to do is to change your perception and form positive thoughts.

Budgeting Helps You Remove Stress, Depression, And Worry From Your Life

Financial crunch is one of the most important reasons for stress, depression, and worry in life. Having a budget will keep your life free from all these painful things. The idea is to control your finances rather than letting your finances control you. Budgeting keeps you aware that where your money is going out, which eventually enables you to make the most productive use of your hard-earned money. It makes life easier, as it can make even the toughest financial goals achievable. There are several everyday financial questions that you have to answer, such as how to arrange the money to pay off certain bills, how to make the money last for two more weeks until you get your next paycheck, and other such things. If you are in the habit of overspending or unmanaged spending, these questions may remain unanswered, causing stress, depression, and worry in your life. On the other hand, a good budget carries answers to all these questions.

You may pay off your debts even if you are not following a proper budget. But, it will eventually be a very costly affair for you, as it will take a long time and you will face lots of hassles. You can compare it with taking a road trip across the country without a roadmap. You can still reach your destination but only after lots of turn around and detours. On the other hand, if you have a roadmap, you can reach your destination faster and with a lot less trouble. Your budget is roadmap to achieve a debt free life and the eventual financial success.

Having a budget is important, but the more important thing is to permanently incorporate the budget habit in your life. It is very important for you to understand that budgeting is not a torture mechanism to save money. Rather, it is a powerful tool to gain control of your finances so that you can fulfill your dreams. You may have to make some tough choices initially, but when you keep in mind your long-term financial goals, you will be motivated to stick to the budget even if things seem a bit rough. Always remember, the main reason why people fail to achieve the desired budgeting success is that they do not stick to it.

Will Power And Habit Forming

Your will power is the most crucial factor that will determine your budgeting success. In fact, self-discipline plays an important role in achieving anything that is difficult but good for you, such as quitting smoking, losing weight, and saving money. Like in dieting, we often find people who start with honest intentions and great planning, but within a couple of days, the plan starts to come down the track, as they don’t have the will power to continue with what they had planned. A similar thing holds true for those trying to quit smoking. Since they have been smoking for long, it is in their habit to smoke. Thus, the will power or self-discipline is important, but the more important thing is to change the habit and form new ones. You will have to work hard to incorporate the budgeting habit into your financial life.

For example, if you are spending too much on entertainment or eating out everyday, your willpower will be critical to break this habit. But, when it comes to let the good habits take its place, self-discipline is not the only solution. You must also have an alternate plan. What you are going to do if you are not going out for lunch everyday? The alternate plan may include brown bagging your lunch to the office and making your coffee at home.

Now that you have the willpower to break old habits and you also have an alternate plan in place, the only thing left now is to practice the new habits. Always remember, it is only through practice and repetition that new habits are formed.

If you do not stop overspending, it will obviously cause a potential crimp in your budget. Thus willpower, an alternate plan, and practice are the three things that can help you stick to your budget. Will power comes through positive attitude. For example, instead of thinking that budgeting means cost reduction and less enjoyment, you should think of it as a powerful tool to fulfill your long-term financial goals, such as buying a new home, buying a new car, or starting a new business. Your alternate plan, on the other hand, is likely to work only if you have realistic expectations. Go slow while trimming your expenses. Trim some more once you find some success. The realistic planning with positive thinking will keep you motivated and you will be able to practice the difficult choices on a regular basis.

Make sure that you review your budget periodically and make necessary adjustments to keep things working.

The financial lifestyle for most salaried people is the same. The salary comes into their checking account and they use ATM card to withdraw money as and when needed – they do this until all the money is gone. Sometimes, they are out of cash while their requirements keep rearing their ugly heads. The situation becomes worse if they have the same irresponsible approach towards the use of credit cards, as well. If this is what you are doing, you will never get to know where your money is going out. You will not be able to have enough savings. Consequently, you will find yourself helpless in case of financial emergencies. Budgeting is the answer to all these problems. It can bring discipline to your financial life. Still, for most people, it is a scary word. They think it is not for them. Here is a brief rundown on some of the myths associated with budgeting.

Budgeting Is Only For Those With Small Paycheck

If you get a large paycheck every month and have lots of money into your bank account, you are very much likely to think like that. However, the truth is that budgeting is for everybody, including you. Think of it this way – budgeting is about setting your financial goals and achieving the same. You may like to buy your own home, buy a car, or start a business. Achieving these long-term goals becomes much easier if you are aware of your spending habits.

Budgeting Is Not For Me Because I My Math Is Bad

Well, there are various budgeting software programs that you can use. Many of them are available on Internet free of cost. You probably know how to use a spreadsheet software program. If not, you can easily learn the same – it’s not very difficult.

I Have A Secure Job

Many people think that since their job is secure, they don’t really need budgeting. Well, now when the entire nation is going through the worst economic downturn, nobody can say with guarantee that his or her job is truly secure. The wise thing to do is to be always prepared for the worst, including a job loss. This is where budgeting can help.

Unexpected Financial Emergencies Only Happen To Others

A wise man cannot think like that. Financial emergencies are often unexpected. There is an endless list of things that can go wrong in life. It is good that you are hoping for the best – that’s positive thinking. But, it will be disastrous if you are not ready for the worst. Budgeting is about keeping prepared for all those tough times.

Budgeting Means Less Enjoyment

It is true that budgeting requires you to make some difficult choices, but it does not necessarily mean less enjoyment. You can still enjoy your life if you make those difficult choices, in a smart way. There are several ways to spend less and have more fun.

So, if any of the above budgeting myths apply to you, this is the time to think about it and accept the truth. Budgeting is undoubtedly a powerful tool to keep your finances on track.
